I was pretty excited when I heard Tippmann was going back to their firearms roots. Their reputation for quality products in every venture they have undertaken is truly legendary, so I knew this would be no different.

Having built many AR-15s of my own I am intimately familiar with the basic platform and I was intrigued by Tippmann's approach to a rimfire AR as it was completely different than other .22LR versions of the AR that have been available up to this point.

Unlike other rimfire ARs that are simply a faux body with an isolated conventional .22 firing system, the M4-22 has a fully-cycling buffer and spring located in the rear buffer tube just like standard caliber AR-15s.

The weight and quality out of the box were blatantly obvious. This was NOT a lightweight plastic toy like some AR22s. This felt just like a 5.56 caliber AR-15. It was solid and sturdy with no rattling or loose parts.

Shouldering it felt very familiar. No different than my other AR-15s.

Upon closer inspection, I slid the rear takedown pin and hinged open the upper receiver from the lower receiver just as you do with any other AR. The trigger group looked just like any AR-15 including the hammer and sear. Out of curiosity I tried inserting one of my 5.56 AR magazines and found they had forged the lower receiver so that the magwell only accepts their proprietary .22LR magazines, which is a good precaution considering how close the feel is to standard ARs.

Speaking of magazines their approach to a rimfire AR magazine is awesome. The appearance is like other AR magazines, but you can slide the protective cover and you will find it's built so you can manually slide the spring down as you load it. It's the easiest-loading .22LR AR magazine I have ever loaded.

when firing everything functions as you would want, and expect from Tippmann. No failures or misfires. I have only shot subsonic ammo with a suppressor on it so the sound of the buffer and buffer spring cycling was a little more noticeable than it would likely be with supersonic rounds. However, I was pleased that the M4-22 cycled lower-power subsonic ammo flawlessly without missing a beat. There are a lot of .22 rifles and pistols out there that have trouble cycling subsonic ammo, and some won't do it at all. It says a lot of the development team and how well balanced the cycling and feed systems are in this rifle.

All-in-all I would like to say how I was surprised at what a great rifle this is.....but I wasn't. Tippmann has ventured into engineering and manufacturing of a lot of precision devices, and they always seem to do their homework and make sure that every product that has that nameplate continues to represent the reputation of quality they have developed over the lst few decades. This was simply another example.

If you are looking for a perfect rifle to introduce someone to shooting higher-caliber AR-15s with....this is it. If you are an avid AR shooter but want something for cheap plinking....this is it.

I, like many AR-15 owners, have a CMMG .22 drop-in conversion kit that I drop in my ARs from time-to-time for cheap plinking. However most of us know that rimfire that .22LR ammo is inherently "dirty" to shoot. Having a familiar, quality AR like this just for shooting .22LR is great, but I didn't like any of the cheesier options that have been available. The Tipmmann M4-22 was the answer. It's the closest rimfire equivalent you will find for an AR-15. Get one for yourself. You won't be sorry.
